The United States of America has surrounded almost all international events, especially with regard to the Soviet Union in the Cold War years, as the American presence is almost present at all levels in every matter that threatens its national security, and among those events is the Soviet nuclear program, which faced a difficult challenge in April 1986, On that day, an explosion occurred in the Chernobyl reactor in Ukraine, which resulted in severe damage to the reactor building, and the release of thick clouds of atomic dust towards the countries of Eastern and Western Europe, and even reached the nearby Asian countries such as Japan.
The American administration paid special attention to this incident, which it called the “nuclear catastrophe,” as the world did not witness anything worse than this disaster, which directly affected the Soviet Union and its foreign relations, especially with the United States of America and its allies who took advantage of this disaster to pass their arms reduction policy. Nuclear, and pressure on Moscow to stop nuclear tests, especially with the policy of openness pursued by the Soviet government.
